"Change happens through movement and movement heals" - Joseph Pilates

Kelley McKenzie

The owner of liv studio, Kelley, has been a teacher of movement for 18 years. She holds a PMA-CPT in Pilates instruction and is a Master Teacher Trainer with the PMA (Pilates Method Alliance). Her passion of exercise science has taken her on trainings around the world with some of the best teachers in the Pilates and Group Fitness community. Pilates has given her the anatomical and biomechanical foundation that is the groundwork for all of her classes. It is that application that allows her clients to be functionally strong outside the studio, whether it be daily tasks or high level athleticism. As an avid athlete herself, she is drawn to the high energy classes of Les Mills group exercise and holds an Elite instructor certification through them. You can hear and feel her level of experience in all the classes she teaches, whether it’s Pilates, Body Combat or Body Pump. She is thrilled to be the owner of such an amazing space and is grateful for her students who bring energy and community and make the studio what it is.

Lala Scriven

Lala Scriven is a Physical Therapist, Certified Pilates and Yoga teacher, and a highly skilled Bodyworker. In 2001, she received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from A.T. Still University, in Arizona. She has been trained in a variety of manual techniques and her love of learning still continues. Searching for another career route, yet complimentary to her PT background, she completed her Pilates certification through Balanced Body University in April 2012. Lala’s vast array of education has enabled her to treat clients with a variety of injuries, as well as assist people in proper movement patterns by implementing progressive strengthening, stretching, and core stabilization programs.

Carol Hockridge

Carol started teaching fitness during college in 1985. The aerobics craze was full force and she found that teaching and motivating others was her passion. She earned a BS degree in exercise physiology and biology from California State Univ. Sacramento.

After a back injury resulting from lots of high-impact aerobics and competing in the National Aerobics Championship, she found Pilates in 1999. She was hooked. Powerhouse Pilates was the first step in learning about Joseph Pilates and his method. She then met Madeline Black of Sonoma, CA. and she became her Pilates mentor and got certified through ITT as well. In 2005, she found a space in East Sacramento and opened a Pilates and Cycling studio, ONE Pilates and Fitness.

2016 found the family moving to Truckee in order for her son to pursue his dream of ski racing in high school.

Pilates has truly been a life saving practice and has empowered her to live the life that is most important and fulfilling. Movement and the way Pilates teaches one to move is truly the essence of life. The combination of neurological challenges (“brain work”), breathing, lengthening, strengthening, control and coordination are key to maintaining a healthy body and mind. Being able to adapt and deal with stress are also benefits of fitness and developing a keen mind-body connection. Pilates is a life-long learning journey, and one that is both rewarding and amazing!

Megan Williams

Megan has been a certified body combat instructor since 2015 and has been taking or teaching body combat for over 10 years! Great music, positive energy, and lots of sweat and laughter. What more could anyone ask for?! Megan’s fitness philosophy centers on the notion that physical fitness promotes emotional and mental well-being, and vice versa.

Megan recently moved back to Tahoe area after spending 7 years living in southeast Alaska, where she earned her PhD in marine science and ocean conservation. When she’s not working as a conservation biologist or fitness instructor, Megan loves to explore the mountains, lakes, and trails with her family!

Michelle Farrell

Michelle’s love of staying active stemmed from childhood. Growing up in the Reno/Tahoe area, she enjoyed all that it had to offer! But it wasn’t until the birth of her first daughter in 2008 that she caught the group fitness bug. Searching for a way to get back in shape, she found Zumba. The transition from student to instructor came without any hesitation. Her passion to help others in their fitness journey, sparked her enthusiasm to continue her education and training in other programs, as well. Over the years, she has acquired certifications to teach Barre Above, BOSU, LES MILLS Shbam, and also became an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor. She is always looking to learn something new, and expand her ability to teach and grow. It’s all about the journey!

Shelley Nielsen

Shelley Nielsen is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer & Group Fitness Instructor with additional certifications from Les Mills (BodyCombat, BodyPump, Sh’Bam and Sprint,) Bosu, TRX, Queenax and more. Her fitness philosophy is to teach the body how to move properly in the gym in order to move well outside the gym, avoid injury and live longer. Shelley also doesn’t believe in anything that feels like punishment for the sake of health (ie: dieting.) “If it makes you smile, enjoy it.” Shelley is excited to join the amazing coaches and students at LIV — “Do what you love and it doesn’t feel like work.”

Jackie Mau

Jackie is happily retired from a long and varied career, including Emergency nursing, software engineering, and lastly nurse consultant in technology at Kaiser Permanente. She discovered Pilates in 1992. It was just beginning to go main stream as opposed to exclusive private sessions. She loved it so much that she went to Pilates training taught by Carol Appel who was taught by Ramona Kryzanowska, Joseph Pilate’s student. So you could say Jackie is a 3rd generation student of the master himself. She was trained in the classical style and was one of the first 100 to be certified by PMA in 2005. She took an occasional hiatus from the practice but always returned for body tune ups. She believes that everyone can benefit from the practice and is very excited to have the opportunity to teach at LIV.

Gina Updegraff

Gina found her passion for health and fitness at an early age. She competed in collegiate volleyball at the University of San Diego, obtained her American Council on Exercise Group Fitness Certification in 1991 and has taught a variety of group fitness classes ever since! Her career as a firefighter was the perfect complement to her love of all things fitness since strength and cardiovascular fitness were a necessary part of the job. Now that she is retired from her career as a firefighter, she plans to delve even deeper into the fitness industry by working towards her Pilates Method Association Certification. Gina is a Certified Personal Trainer and a Les Mills BodyPump instructor. She is also passionate about spending time with family and friends, hiking, mountain biking and snowshoeing. Gina and her husband, Mike, moved to Truckee full-time in 2018 and she is thrilled to be joining the community at LIV!
